How to start your computer in safe mode

Safe Mode is a diagnostic tool that lets you troubleshoot whatever is ailing Windows.
When you boot into Safe Mode the operating system only loads the minimum of software that is required for the operating system to work. This mode of operating is designed to let you troubleshoot and run diagnostics on your computer. When Windows has operated for Safe Mode, the desktop will not have its typical pattern, the screen will display only 16 colors, and Safe Mode will appear in the corners of the screen.

Below are the steps to booting system in safe mode suggested to me by an online tech support representative for solving my malwarebytes problem.

  • If Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer, you can boot into Safe Mode with these instructions:
  • Turn Off your Computer.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
  • To use the System Configuration Utility method
  • Close all open programs.
  • Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
  • The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
  • The computer restarts in Safe mode.
  • Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode. When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

  • First, click on this link and download the program to your "My Documents" folder.: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php You will have to run this program in safe mode and My Documents is one of the few folders you can access in safe mode.
  • To get your computer in safe mode you can find the steps provided here at How to start your computer in safe mode.
  • Your computer will automatically boot into safe mode. Click on your user name and ok. When the desktop comes up, the screen will be black. This is normal for safe mode. Open your my documents folder, and find the yellow diamond icon and double click on it.
  • This will bring up a blue screen and ask to press any key.
  • After you do that, type in the number 2 and press enter.
  • It will turn off all processes and start the program. It usually takes 5 minutes or less to complete. The process will attempt to clean temporary files and ask you to clean the registry. Answer this with a "y" and press enter. When it is done, put your computer into regular mode by the same process as safeboot, only in reverse. Click Start, run and type in msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab and uncheck the safeboot box. Click apply, close and restart.
  • This will have removed the Malware and your computer will boot in normal mode. It does remove the desktop background, so you may have to go back to display properties and change the desktop background again.
